What a Master Coach Developer Does (and Why It Matters for Your Training)

Most riders never think about who trained their coach. I’ve spent a decade thinking about little else. As an NCCP Master Coach Developer, my job has been to help the people who train coaches do that work well.

What a Master Coach Developer does

Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) relies on coach developers. Learning Facilitators lead coaching workshops, and Coach Evaluators observe coaches in action and assess their skills. Master Coach Developers prepare, mentor and support those facilitators and evaluators, so that coach education stays consistent, practical and focused on the athletes it serves.

My path

  • 2015–2017: NCCP Community Coach and Competition-Introduction Coach
  • 2018: Learning Facilitator
  • 2020: Coach Evaluator
  • 2021: Master Coach Developer and Competition-Development Coach

Most of that work happened during my 11 years at Cycling BC, where I led coach development before becoming Learning & Technology Director.

What it taught me

Developing coaches taught me that knowledge is rarely the problem. Most coaches know what good training looks like. The hard part is turning it into habits that fit a busy life, with feedback that helps and support that continues after the course ends. That question became my master’s thesis, Why Coaches Achieve Certification.

Why it matters for your training

The same principles apply when I coach you: clear goals, practice that fits your week, honest feedback and steady support. If you’re a rider who wants a plan you’ll actually stick with, or a coach who wants to grow, book a free call.
